About Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that aims to remove stubborn deposits of fat from around the body that do not respond to healthy lifestyle habits such as dieting or exercise. As patients age, many changes can occur in the body, including changes in metabolism and weight gain, which can leave patients distressed about their altered figure. (3) This treatment can either be performed as part of another procedure or as a standalone treatment to effectively address multiple parts of the body at once. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, thighs, flanks, and love handles. Dr. Colonna performs tumescent liposuction, the gold standard for liposuction procedures.

Suitable Candidates

Suitable candidates for liposuction include those with stubborn deposits of fat that will not respond to dieting, exercise, or other healthy lifestyle habits. Each individual should have maintained a stable weight for at least 6-12 months before their procedure. (1) Ideal candidates also possess firmer, more elastic skin that can retract after their procedure.

All candidates interested in liposuction should be in good health and free from any underlying medical conditions that may inhibit healing. Realistic expectations should also be held regarding what this procedure can accomplish, as liposuction is a body-contouring procedure and not a weight-loss treatment. Those who smoke should be prepared to quit all nicotine use at least 4 weeks before their procedure and maintain their abstinence until fully recovered. Dr. Colonna will determine each patient’s candidacy for liposuction during their consultation.

Personal Consultation

The first step in each patient’s transformation is attending a personal consultation with Dr. Colonna at either our Lake Havasu City or Kingman office. This consultation is designed to allow him to get to know each patient more personally and understand how he can help each patient achieve their ideal body shape. Dr. Colonna will ask each patient a series of questions regarding their medical history, current medications, areas of concern, and ideal results. He will also evaluate each patient’s anatomy.

Using this information, he will plan out each patient’s procedure, personalizing certain aspects to help them achieve their goals. Preparation and recovery instructions will also be provided, and Dr. Colonna will disclose and discuss the cost of the procedure. Patients are asked to be prepared to converse openly about their concerns and goals, as this consultation is dedicated to their specific procedure.

Preparation

Each patient will receive a set of preparatory guidelines from Dr. Colonna during their consultation to help them prepare for their liposuction appointment. He will discuss each step with the patient to ensure they are properly informed on how to prepare themselves best for their procedure.

Patients will need to discontinue using medications and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. Drinking alcohol should be avoided several days before and after the procedure, and the use of nicotine should cease completely until the patient is fully healed. Patients must arrange for transportation home after the procedure, as well as time off from work. Many patients also find it helpful to have a trusted adult assist them with daily tasks.

Procedure

The procedure will begin with the cleansing and sterilization of each patient’s skin before anesthesia is administered to ensure a relaxing procedure. Dr. Colonna will first inject a tumescent solution consisting of epinephrine and lidocaine into the treatment area. This solution helps further numb the treatment area, minimize bleeding, and loosen and swell the fat cells, making them easier to remove. (1)

Dr. Colonna will create a small incision at the treatment area, carefully placing it to ensure minimal scarring and low visibility. A specialized tube called a cannula is then inserted into the treatment area, which loosens the fat cells before gently suctioning them out of the body. Dr. Colonna takes great care to protect surrounding tissues throughout the procedure. Procedure times vary based on the area treated, typically lasting between 1 and 3 hours.

Recovery

Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning each patient will be released home to recover after being monitored. Patients can expect to experience soreness, mild swelling, or bruising at the treatment site, but any pain or discomfort can be managed with medications. Patients may be asked to wear a compression garment to help minimize swelling, protect their new curves, and allow their bodies to heal. Many patients find that they can return to their jobs within several days, but should refrain from physical or strenuous activities for several more weeks. Dr. Colonna will let each patient know when they are cleared to return to both their work and workouts. He will also provide further recovery instructions during each patient’s consultation.

Results

Some patients may notice an improvement immediately following their procedure, but the results of their liposuction will become more apparent several months later. Patients will be able to enjoy a more flattering, sculpted figure with well-defined contours. The results of liposuction are long-lasting, as once the fat cells are removed, they cannot return. However, patients will need to adopt healthy lifestyle habits to maintain and preserve their new curves, such as regularly exercising, as fluctuations in weight can alter the appearance of their results.

  • BHRT: Also known as hormone pellet therapy, this treatment consists of rebalancing each patient’s hormone levels by placing a pellet under the skin. Will there be any visible scarring after my liposuction?
