Tone (Tone®) is a non-surgical treatment that utilizes electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) technology to strengthen and define muscles while also promoting skin tightening. This treatment works by emitting electrical pulses to induce involuntary muscle contractions, restoring strength to areas like the abdomen, buttocks, and hips.

If you are interested in enhancing your muscles and have seen insufficient results with plain exercise, look no further than Prima Medical Care. Led by Dr. Michael Colonna, our team has been helping patients across Arizona for several years, becoming one of the state’s leading destinations for functional and aesthetic care.

About Tone

Tone is a non-surgical body contouring technology that utilizes cutting-edge electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) technology to enhance the strength and definition of the muscles while simultaneously supporting skin tightening in treated areas. This treatment works by emitting low-frequency pulses to stimulate muscle contractions, replicating the mechanisms of an intense workout.

EMS treatments have grown in popularity over the last several years as new frequency-based technologies become more effective at improving protein production and muscle mass. (1)

Tone for Post-Pregnancy Rejuvenation

Many women choose to strengthen their muscles with Tone after pregnancy. Pregnancy affects the body in many ways and can even induce a condition known as diastasis recti. This is a relatively common condition characterized by the separation of the abdominal muscles. This can cause core instability, as well as a visible bulge just above or below the navel. What’s more, this condition can be difficult to address with normal exercise alone. Tone can help strengthen and firm the abdominal muscles, improving the appearance of the torso.

Tone for Athletes

Tone is an ideal treatment for patients with more athletic or intensive lifestyles. EMS treatments can complement the results of working out while also mitigating damage caused by creatine kinase buildup. (1) Creatine kinase is an enzyme that is primarily found in the heart and skeletal muscles. The body releases this enzyme when it recognizes muscle strain or damage, often after an intense workout. (2) Besides enhancing muscle definition and protein synthesis, Tone can also support muscle function and recovery, reducing strain over time.

Benefits of Tone

Tone treatments offer several notable benefits, including:

  • Non-Invasive Procedure: Tone does not require any incisions or anesthesia, reducing the risk of complications significantly.
  • Muscle Toning: Tone can help enhance the visibility, definition, and overall appearance of the muscles while also stimulating protein production. (1)
  • Skin Tightening: Tone can support more elastic skin by improving circulation and boosting collagen production.
  • Minimal Discomfort: Most patients report minimal discomfort during the treatment and often compare the feeling to a high-intensity workout.
  • Quick Session Times: Each treatment session typically lasts around 30 minutes, making this a convenient treatment for patients with busier schedules.
  • No Downtime: Patients will be able to return to their daily routines immediately following their treatment.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Many patients see lasting results from Tone following their treatment.

Suitable Candidates

Candidates interested in Tone are typically men or women who wish to enhance their muscle strength and definition. These often include athletic individuals interested in supporting the results of their workouts, as well as postpartum women interested in rebuilding their core strength. While Tone has been associated with some indirect skin tightening benefits, patients with more severe skin laxity may be recommended for an alternative treatment.

All candidates interested in Tone should be in good overall health with realistic expectations as to what this treatment can achieve. We do not recommend Tone for pregnant individuals or those with certain heart conditions. Our specialists will determine each patient’s candidacy during the consultation phase.

Personal Consultation

We ask each patient to attend a personal consultation at either our Lake Havasu or Kingman clinic before their Tone treatment. One of our specialists will meet with you to discuss your medical history, concerns, and ideal results.

After determining your candidacy, your specialist will craft a treatment plan, tailoring certain aspects to help you achieve your unique goals. They will provide preparation and recovery instructions, as well as a price quote.

Preparation

Our specialists provide you with a set of preparation instructions before your Tone appointment. While preparation is minimal, it is important to follow each instruction for the best possible results. You should stay hydrated, maintain a nutritious diet, eat a light meal several hours before arrival, and make sure your skin is free of any skincare products, oils, or fragrances.

Procedure

Your treatment will begin with the cleansing of your skin. Your specialist will then place the Tone applicators on the targeted treatment area. Our specialists can use these applicators on several parts of the body, including the abdomen, hips, and buttocks.

Once the treatment begins, you will start to feel the deep muscle contractions; many patients say this feels similar to a high-intensity workout. The muscles contract each time they receive electrical stimulation. Each treatment session lasts approximately 30 minutes, making this an ideal treatment even for busier patients.

Recovery

There is little to no downtime associated with Tone, meaning you will likely be able to return to your daily activities immediately following their treatment. Some patients report slight soreness or muscle fatigue, but these effects are temporary and will subside within a few days. We recommend that patients rest and continue to drink plenty of water. Stretching or walking can help alleviate any feelings of tightness in the meantime. Your specialist will provide any further instructions before your appointment.

Results

Most patients are able to experience the best results after several Tone sessions. Muscle definition improves gradually; as it does, patients tend to notice enhanced muscle visibility, strength, and a more contoured figure. As a result, many of our patients also report improved self-esteem and confidence. The results of a Tone treatment can last several months, but many see extended effects with the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits, including regular exercise and a nutritious diet. Patients can also benefit from regular maintenance treatments to maintain and enhance results.

Corresponding Procedures

Tone effectively pairs with other procedures for more comprehensive results, including:

  • Morpheus8: Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency microneedling treatment that can improve the quality of one’s skin, leaving a radiant, refreshed appearance. This skin rejuvenation treatment creates small punctures in the skin’s surface at different depths while emitting radiofrequency waves, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. Morpheus8 can address a variety of concerns, including skin laxity, scarring, acne, wrinkles, and more.
  • VTone: VTone is a non-invasive EMS treatment that strengthens weak pelvic floor muscles and alleviates symptoms of urinary incontinence. This procedure uses a small electrical stimulator to send pulses into and around the vaginal canal, causing them to contract. These contractions, similar to Tone, strengthen the muscles and stimulate collagen synthesis.
